What Is Spyware?

What Is Spyware?
What Is Spyware?

Spyware is a critical threat for both home users and organisations. We must also not forget that this type of malicious software, known as spyware, carries the risk of compromising sensitive information. Another problem with these types of applications is that they consume too many of your system’s resources. Both spyware and adware use high amounts of memory. The more applications there are on your system, the more system resources they can consume, to the point where your legitimate software may run out of RAM while running, and you may encounter freezing problems. System memory is an important component for computers, and a certain amount of RAM must remain free for applications to run stably.

The primary difference between spyware and adware lies in the functions they perform on your machine. Both infect your machine in the same way. However, spyware aims to take information from your machine and make it available to another party (turning it into a zombie).

Adware tries to generate pop-up advertisements on your machine. Since these advertisements are not generated by the web browser, many traditional pop-up blockers cannot stop them.

Both spyware and adware are growing risks for network security and personal computer security. Even today, we unfortunately see that organisations and personal users do not take spyware seriously. Some of these applications only aim to change the browser homepage. Of course, there are also those that add items to your favourites or are far more intrusive.

Protection Against Spyware

Most antivirus products include anti-spyware features. Anti-spyware / antivirus software is an excellent defence method against spyware and adware, just as it protects against viruses and Trojan horses. Fundamentally, these security software programs are applications that scan your computer to check for spyware running on your machine. Most anti-spyware applications work by auditing your system for known spyware files. However, identifying specific activities that define spyware is difficult in practice.

Running anti-spyware software in today’s internet environment is just as important as running an Antivirus. Failing to do so can have serious consequences. Remember — personal data and perhaps sensitive business data can easily be leaked without your knowledge due to spyware.
