A firewall is a network security device (security wall) that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic and either blocks or allows data packets based on a set of security rules.
There must be some boundary points between your network and the outside world. To give an example of these connection points: in corporate networks, the most commonly used boundary devices are firewall devices. These devices are called security walls (firewalls). They create a barrier between your network and the external network or internet, imposing access restrictions. Authorised access can communicate data, while unauthorised access is blocked. These authorisations consist of rules defined on the firewall devices. These rules enable certain restrictions to be placed between computers and your networks. We would like to note that not every connection method on the internet or in internal communications is a legal connection, and that there is always a possibility of a cyber attack among these connections.
A firewall examines each data packet that attempts to pass through it and compares it against a predefined set of rules. If the packet matches an allow rule, it is permitted to pass. If it matches a block rule, or if no matching rule is found and the default policy is to deny, the packet is dropped or rejected.
Firewalls can be implemented as dedicated hardware devices, as software installed on a computer, or as cloud-based virtual appliances. Each approach has its advantages and is suited to different deployment scenarios.
