Windows, Mac and Linux Disk Encryption

Microsoft Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems offer encryption tools to prevent the loss of confidential data. Disk encryption is one of these tools. Disk encryption is an encryption technology that renders information within the operating system unreadable against attacks from outside and against unauthorised individuals. Disk encryption can be implemented both as a built-in feature of operating systems and through third-party disk encryption software. At the same time, technologies that encrypt every bit of data accessed in any part of the system disk have been developed for our privacy and security.

In today’s technology world, disk encryption is used not only for system disks but across many areas — from USB devices to storage products.

What Is the Encrypting File System (EFS)?

The Encrypting File System, referred to as EFS, is an application that prevents unauthorised access to a disk. It is a type of encryption used by the Microsoft Windows operating system. Introduced with version 3.0 of NTFS, this technology is a feature that provides encryption at the file system level. Files can only be read when you log on to the computer using your user account.

You can also use EFS to encrypt individual files and entire drives. Of course, for good security and privacy, completely encrypting folders or drives rather than encrypting files individually will always be the correct approach. When you encrypt a folder or drive, all the files inside the disk are also encrypted. Naturally, new files created on the encrypted disk or in the encrypted folder are also automatically encrypted. This keeps privacy at the highest level.

What Is BitLocker?

BitLocker Drive Encryption provides a clear layer of protection by encrypting the entire hard drive. It is used in Microsoft Windows operating systems. By tying this encryption to a key stored in a chip on the motherboard called the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) (in some cases software-based), it reduces the risk of data being accessed when the hard drive is stolen and placed in another computer. In such a scenario, the thief would boot into an alternative operating system and attempt to retrieve data from the stolen drive or computer.

BitLocker To Go can also extend BitLocker encryption to removable drives such as USB flash drives.

The Linux operating system offers a range of encryption techniques to protect data on physical devices such as hard drives or removable media. This technique is a technology called Linux Unified Key Setup (LUKS), which enables Linux partitions to be encrypted.

What Is Linux Unified Key Setup (LUKS)?

LUKS is a technology suitable for protecting data on removable storage units or computer disk drives, and it can encrypt the entire device. LUKS uses the existing device mapper kernel subsystem and is strong against dictionary attacks.

LUKS (Linux Unified Key Setup) presents itself as a standard designed for hard disk encryption in Linux operating systems. LUKS also ensures compatibility across various distributions. LUKS stores all necessary configuration information in the partition header, which makes it easy to transport data completely and without issues.

Of course, security has always been a priority on Mac devices. Encryption technologies are also available for Mac computers. FileVault is one of the most important full disk protection applications for Mac devices.

What Is FileVault for Mac?

FileVault provides full disk encryption in Mac operating systems. It is a disk encryption technology used to prevent unauthorised access to information on your startup disk. This technology, produced for Mac devices, is one of the ideal methods for maintaining the privacy of sensitive data. FileVault encrypts the entire contents of your computer, so that in the event of your computer being lost, stolen, or damaged, the privacy of your data remains a priority.
